The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) was shocked yesterday morning by the news that Johan Neeskens has suddenly passed away at the age of 73. During the last couple of days he was in Algeria, working for the KNVB WorldCoaches program, where he became unwell. Unfortunately, medical help couldn’t make a difference for him.

With the passing of Johan Neeskens, the Dutch and international football world has lost a legend. His name is forever linked to European successes with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona and two World Cup finals for the Dutch national team.

Neeskens made 49 international appearances on the Dutch national team and with his characteristic tackles, sublime insights and iconic penalties, will forever remain one of the most prominent and beloved players to ever play for our country. After his more than impressive career as a player in which he made a name for himself all over the world, he became a club coach, a coach of national youth teams and an assistant national coach during the time that Frank Rijkaard was head coach.

KNVB Worldcoaches

At a later age Johan Neeskens became the driving force and the embodiment of KNVB WorldCoaches. This program, for which he flew across the world to train coaches in low- and middle-income countries, is designed to develop coaches while using football as a tool to provide for a better life. It was tailor made for him. To be on the field with other football fans trying to achieve something great together, characterized Johan Neeskens in a nutshell.

Both on and off the field as a player and a coach, he was known for his tenacity. But those of us who were lucky enough to get to know Johan Neeskens in real life, mostly saw a former football player who had become a citizen of the world. We will also remember him as a gentle family man who was proud of his children and grandchildren and who managed to touch others with his love for football, until the very end.

A lot of strength

The Royal Netherlands Football Association wishes his wife Marlis, his children Christian, Tamara, Bianca and Armand, his grandchildren Djoy and Lovée, his loved ones and his friends a lot of strength in bearing this great loss.
