New laws of the game

The KNVB opts for innovation and development to make football on the pitch more fun and more attractive.

In order to ensure that everyone continues to enjoy football, it is important to experiment with rules that make the game more attractive. The KNVB takes concrete action to make football future proof, for today's and tomorrow's generation of players.

THE SUCCESS OF THE VIDEO ASSISTANT REFEREE

Together with other parties, the KNVB is committed to enabling technological developments in football.

New formats and new rules are tested and subsequently evaluated with players, trainers and fans. A successful example of a KNVB initiative that was introduced throughout the world is the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The VAR was used successfully during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. After some initial scepticism, everyone has become convinced that the VAR is part of the future of football. The system corrects crucial mistakes made by the referee. This makes the game fairer.

EXPERIMENTS WITH laws of the game

The KNVB is proactively exploring changes in the laws of the game, such as in the Future Rules Football League. The Under-23 teams of top-level amateur clubs in the Netherlands play their competition subject to new rules, with the KNVB collecting and processing the data. We can improve the sport by continuously reviewing the rules and the data.
