The Netherlands have failed to make the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Oranje ended its qualifying series for next year’s finals on Tuesday night, beating Sweden 2-0 in the Amsterdam ArenA. This was not enough to go through to the play-off competition. The Dutch ended in third place in Group A with an inferior goal difference with runners-up Sweden.

The Netherlands faced a next to impossible task in the ArenA. Dick Advocaat’s men fell short of the seven-goal margin they needed to replace their opponents in the play-offs.

The coveted runners-up position would have given them a second chance to qualify. But the miracle didn’t materialise and the Netherlands finished third in qualifying Group A, behind Sweden and France.
