On the day that the Netherlands plays Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier, another special match will take place in Kaunas. In this Lithuanian city on the eastern border of Europe, where some 250 Dutch soldiers are stationed to guard the NATO border, they will swap their equipment for whistles and bibs, together with KNVB WorldCoaches. Together, they are organising a sports day for Lithuanian children, an initiative in which football and defence work together to promote safety, connection and resilience.

While our military protects Europe, we invest in the strength of the local community through sport. "Football knows no boundaries, just like our security", says Lieutenant Colonel Don Filon. "Our Dutch military personnel are here to protect, connect and collaborate, and that's what we're doing today, but in a different way."

WorldCoaches

The day consists of football training sessions led by experienced WorldCoaches, interspersed with playful military assignments that focus on cooperation. No hard drills, just fun with a purpose: to show that sport is about cooperation, respect and resilience.

Values that are essential both on the pitch and within the armed forces. "Football allows us to experience time and again how playing together strengthens bonds and increases understanding. The WorldCoaches program is making this visible today in Kaunas. It is an honour to have this impact in Europe and far beyond the borders of our continent. This is how Dutch football contributes to diplomacy, development and defence", says Gijs de Jong.

"Today we showed that this is more than just our core tasks of 'defend' and 'deter'. It's also about 'reassurance', giving confidence to the Lithuanian people."

Invest in local communities

Through the WorldCoaches program, the KNVB, together with the Dutch government, invests in local communities by training coaches to become role models. On 7 September, this will become visible and tangible in Kaunas: military personnel and sports coaches will literally stand side by side on the field.

"We protect the security of Europe with our mission", says Lieutenant Colonel Don Filon. "But today we showed that this is more than just our core tasks of 'defend' and 'deter'. It's also about 'reassurance', giving confidence to the Lithuanian people. And this afternoon we did that on the field, tonight we'll do it in the stands as one team behind the Dutch national team."
