The KNVB has signed a cooperation agreement with the Indonesian football federation PSSI. On Wednesday, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed by KNVB secretary general Gijs de Jong and PSSI president Erick Thohir. The first result of the cooperation is the friendly match between the Dutch women's national football team and Indonesia on Friday 25 October.
Today's football in Indonesia is developing at a rapid pace. The cooperation between the PSSI and the KNVB will aim to accelerate this growth. This will include the training of coaches, talent development, international matches between national (youth) teams and the development of women's football.
The Netherlands and Indonesia have a strong historical relationship. There are also many cross links in football. Players with Indonesian roots like Simon Tahamata, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Tijjani Reijnders conquered the world with Oranje, while several Dutch players now play for Timnas Indonesia, the national team of Indonesia.
Because of the crossovers, Oranje is hugely popular in the Asian country. National coach Ronald Koeman's team is closely followed by millions of Indonesians. Images of wildly enthusiastic Indonesian followers of the Dutch national team during European Championships and World Cups have also gone viral in the Netherlands in recent years.
In addition, the KNVB has been active in Indonesia for over a decade with the WorldCoaches programme. During this period, more than 700 coaches - 25 per cent of whom are women - were trained. This allows more than 15,000 boys and girls to train weekly under the guidance of locally trained coaches. Next week, another new course will be organised for local coaches.
The KNVB and PSSI had a common desire to reach a Memorandum of Understanding for some time. With the signing, this was ratified on Wednesday. The duration of the agreement is four years. The cooperation is in line with the KNVB's international strategy. As one of the original founders of FIFA, the association feels a responsibility to continue to innovate and develop football. This includes sharing its innovative vision with other football associations.
Secretary general Gijs de Jong, Michael van der Star (Head of International Programs) and Ruud van der Sar (Head of Sales/New Partnerships) are currently in Indonesia. During their visit, several meetings are planned with various departments of the PSSI to develop a joint and concrete roadmap. They also visited the Indonesian Minister of Sports and attended the match between the Indonesia Under-20s and Maldives peers. Furthermore, the KNVB delegation will visit Marc Gerritsen, the new Dutch ambassador to Indonesia.
