Last week, WorldCoaches organised its first course in Fiji. With 16,156 kilometres between the KNVB Campus and the Fiji FA academy, it is the furthest course so far. The opening of the course was on Monday, 7 October, in the presence of Secretary General Gijs de Jong and Fiji FA general manager Mohammed Yusuf.
In 2023, the Women's World Cup took place in Australia and New Zealand. This has caused a significant growth in the number of women and girls playing football. To ensure that the also benefit the region, we are implementing a WorldCoaches course in collaboration with the Dutch embassy in Wellington.
There are 17 female participants and nine men active in women's football, including two trainees flown in from Tuvalu. Trainees from all over Fiji participated, bringing in new coaches in more remote areas, where there are fewer opportunities for children to be trained by a well-trained coach.
Many trainees are employed by the Fiji Football Association and, in their role, responsible for the development of girls' and women's football. Teachers also took part in the course. Football in Fiji is mostly played in schools and there are often not enough sports teachers for the large numbers of children.
During the course, students learn how to organise a good training session according to the Dutch vision on football. In addition, they learn how to integrate life skills and make the link with social issues so that the football activities contribute to the players' personal development.
The course also discussed issues such as drug abuse and domestic violence. On Friday 11 October, the course concluded with a tournament for more than 100 children, in the presence of the Honorary Consul in Fiji and representatives of the Dutch embassy in New Zealand.
