The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Federashon di Futbol Korsou (FFK). The Memorandum of Understanding was ratified on Thursday in Willemstad, Curaçao by KNVB chairman Frank Paauw and Gilbert Martina, president of the FFK.

The signing of the agreement was the culmination of a three-day visit by the KNVB delegation, consisting of Paauw and Secretary General Gijs de Jong, to the Caribbean island with which the Netherlands shares a long history. Since 2010, Curaçao has been an autonomous, independent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Strengthened relationship

The ties between the FFK and the KNVB have existed for a long time and have always been good. The recent appointment of Chairman Martina and Secretary General Jan Peter Dogge has further strengthened the relationship. Over the past few months, various substantive conversations have taken place, leading to agreements to establish official cooperation.

‘The FFK and KNVB are respected football associations that are part of the same kingdom. We are delighted to further confirm and strengthen our formal and informal relations,’ said KNVB Chairman Frank Paauw.

His fellow FFK chairman, Gilbert Martina, saw the further strengthening of ties between the two associations as the fulfilment of a long-cherished wish. 'We are very honoured by this long-term partnership with the KNVB. We are convinced that this collaboration will be of great added value to the further development of football in Curaçao.'

Both associations intend to share their knowledge and expertise and support each other wherever possible. The collaboration will initially focus on training coaches and referees. Topics such as match organisation, infrastructure development, and women's and youth football are also on the agenda.

World Cup participants

Both football nations are preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. This is a particularly special milestone for Curaçao. In November, the country qualified for the global finals for the first time. With 156,000 inhabitants, Curaçao is the smallest country ever to compete for the world title. With the Netherlands also participating in the World Cup, we are looking forward to a festive summer of soccer in the kingdom.

Strategy

The collaboration fits in with the KNVB's strategy. As one of the original founders of FIFA, the association feels a responsibility to continue to innovate and develop football. This also means that the KNVB shares its innovative vision with other football associations.
