When Angela Depondt’s daughter decided to start wearing a hijab, Angela was worried. Not about her daughter’s choice, but about whether she could still play handball comfortably. Soon she realized: clothing should never be a barrier to participation. This insight became the inspiration for her own business: Hijub

Finding a sports hijab that felt like part of a team kit proved to be surprisingly difficult. “Most hijabs were just standard white or black,” Angela explains. “They didn’t match the uniform.” Determined to change this, she experimented with fabrics, designs, and fits. The result: the Hijub: a first in the Netherlands, combining “hijab” and “club,” fully customizable with club colors and logos.

Brave and impactful

After initial tests with her daughter, players from amateur clubs tried the Hijub on the field. The initiative reached a new milestone through a collaboration with FC Utrecht Next, allowing children to wear FC Utrecht Hijubs as player escorts during match line-ups. “I’m a teacher by profession and never imagined I would start a business,” says Angela. “Seeing our Hijub on the field at FC Utrecht made me incredibly proud.”

Ewout Karel, manager of FC Utrecht Next, adds: “Almost 1 million people play football at 2,800 clubs, each with their own unique club colors. But if you want to play wearing a hijab? You don’t get 2,800 options. Angela saw this gap and chose to act. That’s both brave and impactful. This is exactly why our innovation platform exists.”

Meaningful innovation

Angela is continuing to expand the Hijub line, now available in five colors and a second model that aligns with current hijab fashion. Testing continues at schools and sports clubs. “The goal is for every child to feel fully part of their team, without clothing being a barrier,” says Angela. With Hijub, a personal challenge became a small but meaningful innovation: a garment that unites inclusivity and team spirit.
