At the annual UEFA Grassroots Awards, the Coaching Girls Module has won gold in the category Best Education Initiative. The module was developed by the KNVB in collaboration with Nike and aims to help coaches better support girls in grassroots football.

The module was initiated following research among players who had recently quit playing football. Among girls, particularly those aged 13 to 19, one of the main reasons identified was that coaching did not sufficiently meet their needs. As a result, the KNVB and Nike joined forces to better educate coaches of mixed and girls’ teams in youth football, raising awareness and educating these coaches about the differences between coaching boys and girls. This led to the creation of the Coaching Girls Module.

14 themes

The module consists of 14 themes featuring practical information, instructional videos and useful tips to help coaches guide and develop female players, ensuring they feel better seen and heard. In addition, a Coaching Girls handbook is available, and the KNVB organises workshops across the country. Since its launch in September 2024, 2,360 people have received the handbook and 1,250 coaches have attended the workshops. Participants rate the workshops highly, with an average score of 8.6 out of 10.

Roos Brouwer, responsible for the Coaching Girls programme at the KNVB, said: "We are proud that so many coaches and Heads of Academy attended and valued our workshops. Thanks to them, we are truly making an impact with this programme and creating a better development environment for girls. It is great to see so many coaches being open to developing themselves in this area. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of Coaching Girls."

Impact on football in Europe

The UEFA Grassroots Awards are presented annually to clubs and projects that have made a valuable impact on football in Europe. Each award recognises an inclusive, innovative and sustainable contribution to grassroots football. This year’s awards were presented at a UEFA event at its headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, on 31 March 2026.

As the KNVB, we are honoured and proud of this international recognition. We are seeing positive developments in girls’ and women’s football, not only through Coaching Girls but also through initiatives such as Kickstars and Step In. This recognition provides extra motivation to continue this important work. Coaching Girls has received recognition before: the collaboration with Nike was awarded a gold SponsorRing in the Society category in 2025.
