The KNVB also plays a significant role in the world of international football. Here is an overview of the key developments over the past few months.

KNVB Worldcoaches

Jordania

In January, WorldCoaches reached a significant milestone in Jordan with the first course delivered entirely by local instructors, Rawan Al Tal and Reyad Alselawy. This demonstrates that local capacity has been built up and that the programme is firmly established within the community. It also marks a significant step in the development of the local trainers, who are now able to deliver WorldCoaches courses independently. The programme contributes to a more inclusive sporting environment and enhances opportunities for female coaches. The training was made possible with support from the Dutch Embassy and partner AFDP Global.

Tunesia

At the end of March, the closing ceremony of the Shiraka WorldCoaches programme in Tunisia (2024–2025 phase) took place. The programme, funded by the Dutch Embassy and supported by the Tunisian Ministry of Youth and Sport, used football as a tool for social inclusion and skills development. Across nine regions, 235 coaches, 79 of whom were women, were trained through a variety of learning pathways, with strong involvement from local and international partners. These coaches currently train 8,602 local children on a weekly basis. The ceremony brought WorldCoaches together to share their impact, success stories and themes such as women and entrepreneurship in sport.

COA/UEFA Foundation

As part of the KNVB WorldCoaches project at the asylum seekers’ centre in Ter Apel, we welcomed a special guest coach in April: Khalida Popal. Khalida is a former captain of the Afghan women’s national football team and was herself forced to flee to Denmark, where she founded the Girl Power foundation. Using sport as a means of integration and empowerment, the clinics focused primarily on women, girls and children from refugee backgrounds.

Lebanon

In February, the Dutch Deputy Ambassador to Lebanon, Marieke Wierda, presented certificates to eight Lebanese coaches who had successfully completed the KNVB WorldCoaches programme. The ceremony highlighted the role of sport in social impact and youth development. These coaches are currently organising football and life skills activities for children in Lebanon who are affected on a daily basis by the Israeli attacks in the country. The initiative is part of the Shiraka programme and is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dawaer Foundation.

Johan Neeskens Legancy Grant

On 13 April, we launched the first call for applications for the Johan Neeskens Legacy Grant, in honour of the legendary number 13 of the Dutch national team. This fund was established to honour the lasting impact of Johan Neeskens: not only as an iconic footballer, but above all as a person and a coach who firmly believed in the power of football to help others.

The Johan Neeskens Legacy Grant amounts to €4,900, a reference to his 49 international caps for the Dutch national team, and is awarded annually to a World Coach or group of World Coaches. The grant is intended for organising an event in which football is used to benefit children and/or young people facing social challenges. With this grant, KNVB WorldCoaches aims to continue Johan Neeskens’ legacy by investing in coaches who share his values and are committed to the development of young people, both as footballers and as individuals.

International Academy

Ghana

In February, KNVB instructors Hesterine Reus and Raimond Massop delivered the first ten-day module of the CAF A Licence course in Accra, at the invitation of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). It was the first time in years that the GFA had organised this course and a fine example of technical cooperation between the two football associations. Later this season, the instructors are also likely to join a number of the follow-up modules.

USA

In January, the KNVB hosted DePauw University from the US for a two-day clinic featuring training sessions and theory on the Dutch football philosophy. In addition, 47 American (youth) coaches visited the Netherlands in March for a three-day programme featuring Eredivisie matches and visits to the youth academies of AZ and Feyenoord. Both activities were organised in collaboration with partner Premier International Tours.
