The KNVB welcomes FIFA’s decision to withdraw the proposal. This is an important and sensible decision.
From the outset, together with UEFA and our fellow European member associations, we made it clear that both the substance of the proposal and the way it was developed were unacceptable to us.
However, the withdrawal of the proposal does not close the matter for the KNVB. The way this process has unfolded has resulted in a fundamental loss of confidence in the leadership of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The KNVB no longer has confidence in his leadership. This is reflected not only in the concerns expressed by member associations around the world, but also in the criticism and concerns that have emerged from within FIFA itself. This situation calls for a serious discussion about the future of governance and leadership within FIFA.
This outcome demonstrates how important it is that decisions about the future of international football are taken transparently and in close consultation with all relevant stakeholders. Together with UEFA and member associations around the world, the KNVB will continue to advocate for good governance and a strong international football ecosystem, with the interests of the game always coming first.
