We have seen what a major football event can bring to our country
Gijs de Jong (Secretary General of the Royal Netherlands Football Association): "We have been wanting to host the UEFA Women's Champions League final in the Netherlands for quite for time so it’s great to see it happen now. And it’s even more wonderful that we will become the first sold out final in history. With bringing matches like this to our country, we hope to inspire girls and women to become even more involved in football. To become a player, a coach, a board member, a referee or a fan. During and in the years after the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 which was also hosted here, we have seen what a major football event can bring to our country. With this in mind we recently launched our bid to host the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027, together with Germany and Belgium."
The UEFA Women's Champions League was known as the UEFA Women's Cup until 2009. The 22nd final of the tournament will be held in the stadium of PSV in Eindhoven. Over the past decade, the eight finals where crowds were allowed, have had an average of 18,900 fans in the stadium. The 2020 and 2021 finals were played without fans because of Covid regulation.
In The Netherlands, the current record of the most attended match in women's football is set by the Dutch national women’s team. They played on the first of June in 2019 against Australia in the stadium of PSV in front of 30.640 fans. In the Azerion Women's Eredivisie, a new national milestone was achieved earlier this season when 33.742 tickets were sold for the match between Ajax and Feyenoord in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Next year, the UEFA Women's Champions League final will take place at the stadium of Athletic Bilbao, which holds 53,000 places.
The UEFA Women's Champions League final 2023 in Eindhoven is a collaboration between the City of Eindhoven, the Philips Stadium and the Royal Netherlands Football Association. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 PM on Saturday, June the 3th. The match will be broadcast live by the Dutch tv-station, NOS.
